Manerix (moclobemide) is a reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A (RIMA) medication, used to treat depression, social phobia, and numerous other psychiatric disorders, as well as pain prevention. It can be used in patients age 18 and up.

As a RIMA, Manerix is in the monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) class of medications, but unlike regular, irreversible MAOIs, Manerix produces fewer side effects, is less likely to interact with foods and other medications, and does not stay in the body nearly as long. This provides numerous advantages, though the drawback is that in severe cases RIMAs are sometimes not as effective as irreversible MAOIs.

Dosage & Administration

Manerix comes in tablets of 150 mg or 300 mg. Tablets should be swallowed whole and taken after a meal. In most cases, administration is as follows:

• Start with 150 mg taken twice per day.
• After one to four weeks, dosage may be increased if needed to 300 mg taken twice per day.
• Occasionally patients take 300 mg three times per day.

Full effects will be felt after two to four weeks of treatment. Patients taking Manerix to treat psychiatric disorders will begin to feel more in control; better able to manage thoughts, better focus, better clarity, improved impulse control, and so forth. Duration of treatment in these cases can be quite variable, but usually lasts at least 9 months.

Those who buy Manerix for pain prevention typically stay at lower doses, and treatment may continue indefinitely. The medication reduces the frequency and severity of pain, and improves function in conditions like fibromyalgia or Parkinson's disease. Do not buy Manerix to treat painful episodes, however; for example, it will not stop a headache in progress---it is not a direct painkiller.
